Course Overview

This course provides the essential knowledge and hands-on training required to safely operate a forklift truck in accordance with all relevant legislative and workplace safety standards.

Delivered face-to-face by experienced industry trainers, this program prepares participants to perform forklift operations confidently and competently in industrial settings, including mining, construction, and logistics.

Participants will be trained in planning tasks, preparing the work area, carrying out forklift operations, and packing up safely — aligning with the requirements for obtaining a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL).

What you will learn

Participants will develop a thorough understanding of:

  • Access and apply forklift documentation and confirm work requirements
  • Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement control measures
  • Select and wear required PPE
  • Identify approved attachments and comply with capacity limits
  • Coordinate planned activities with site personnel
  • Conduct pre-start checks, identify and rectify basic faults
  • Fit, use, and remove attachments per procedures and guidelines
  • Operate forklift to secure, lift, transfer, and place loads safely; monitor traffic, hazards, and alarms
  • Park, shut down, and complete post-operation inspections
  • Clear work area, manage / report hazards, and complete required documentation

Please note: Completion of this unit does not in itself grant a High Risk Work Licence. A separate application must be submitted to WorkSafe WA.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates must meet the minimum Language, Literacy, and Numeracy requirements completing an LLND assessment prior to enrolment.

Candidates must also:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Present current photo ID (current driver’s licence or passport)
Assessment requirements

A candidate cannot be deemed competent for the unit unless they are able to demonstrate satisfactory performance (to the required level) in all assessment tasks.

Certification and renewal

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate and Notice of Assessment for TLILIC0003 – Licence to operate a forklift truck.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment and will be eligible to apply for a High Risk Work Licence through WorkSafe WA.

Completion of this unit does not in itself grant a High Risk Work Licence. A separate application must be submitted to WorkSafe WA.
