Course Overview

This course equips you with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely perform tasks at height in the resources and infrastructure industries.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to identify work requirements, follow safety instructions, access and install the correct equipment, carry out work at heights safely, and properly clean and secure the work area upon completion.

This training provides a strong foundation to help you work confidently, efficiently, and in line with industry safety standards.

What you will learn

Participants will develop a thorough understanding of:

  • Identify workplace hazards; carry out risk assessment and implement controls
  • Apply risk management strategies and establish barricading/exclusion zones
  • Understand relevant legislation, regulations, and standards for working at heights
  • Follow equipment operating instructions and manufacturer specifications
  • Correctly fit and use full-body harnesses
  • Use safety systems and equipment, including fall and perimeter protection
  • Understand ground clearance requirements and the pendulum effect
  • Consult with personnel to determine required tools and ensure they are serviceable.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates must meet the minimum Language, Literacy, and Numeracy requirements.

Candidates must also:

  • Be physically able to work at heights
  • Be in good general health and fitness
  • Undertake manual handling tasks

Prior to attending the practical training session, students must complete the online theory section in their own time, with learning content issued once the booking is confirmed.

Assessment requirement

A candidate cannot be deemed competent for the unit unless they are able to demonstrate satisfactory performance (to the required level) in all assessment tasks.

Certification and renewal

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of RIIWHS204E – Work safely at heights.

While this certificate does not have a formal expiry, industry best practice recommends refresher training every two years to maintain competency and compliance. 

Completion of this unit does not in itself grant a High Risk Work Licence. A separate application must be submitted to WorkSafe WA.
