Course Overview
The Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course (RIIWHS202E) provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge to safely plan, enter, work in, and exit confined spaces across a variety of industrial settings.
Confined spaces present unique hazards that require specialised training to ensure the safety of all personnel. This nationally recognised course is ideal for workers in mining, construction, oil & gas, utilities, and maintenance industries who are required to enter and perform duties in confined or restricted environments.
What you will learn
This comprehensive training covers both theoretical and practical components, including:
- Confirm work requirements and apply relevant confined space documentation
- Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement control measures
- Obtain entry permit and confirm emergency procedures with stand-by personnel
- Select and wear appropriate PPE; set up signage, barriers, and rescue equipment
- Select, inspect, and prepare tools and equipment for use
- Test and monitor atmosphere; apply tagging and lock-out procedures
- Enter confined space safely, maintain communication, and comply with permit and entry time
- Exit confined space safely; recover and inspect tools, equipment, and work area
- Remove tagging, barriers, and signage; clean and store equipment
- Complete inspections, servicing, and required documentation per workplace procedures.
This course combines flexible self-paced online theory with hands-on practical training in a controlled environment.

Eligibility criteria
All candidates must meet the minimum Language, Literacy, and Numeracy requirements completing an LLND assessment prior to enrolment.
Candidates must also:
- Be physically able to work in confined spaces
- Be in good general health and fitness
Prior to attending the practical training session, students must complete the online theory section in their own time, with learning content issued once the booking is confirmed.
Assessment requirements
To successfully complete the course, participants must demonstrate competence in both theory and practical assessments.
Certification and renewal
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces.
While this certificate does not have a formal expiry, industry best practice recommends refresher training every two years to maintain competency and compliance.
Completion of this unit does not in itself grant a High Risk Work Licence. A separate application must be submitted to WorkSafe WA.
